The following is a guest post by Jason Anthony. Do you know the difference between having thanks and truly being grateful? It has been said that you do not know what you have until it is gone, and that is a lesson that could not be more true for me. I used to sort of bounce through life offering thanks to many around me in a cordial kind of way, but I didnt really consider what it meant to have a real appreciation for what it was I had.

Last week was Grandparent’s Day at my nephew’s school. Unfortunately my parents were out of town, so my sister-in-law asked me if I would step in. My nephew is also my godson, and I see him so rarely, I couldn’t possibly say no.

Today, the children and I went outside for lunch. The wind helped me to gently lay a blanket across the soft grass. We breathed in the fresh, fragrant summer air, and listened. We listened to the sound of the occasional airplane passing by, the sound of the wind rustling through the weeds on the border of our property. The birds sang a beautiful melody, while the crickets played their background music.

It drove her bananas when she would watch a movie without an ending, leaving her to decide the outcome. The freedom to imagine never changed the fact that it remained one big question mark. Like a metaphor for life the hardest part to accept is that there are no real answers. Not on this blog or another or another.
