Pop Culture Mama Talks to Allison Winn Scotch
New York Times bestselling author Allison Winn Scotch is having the time of her life. Her new book – The One That I Want – just hit bookstores on Tuesday. Perfect for summer reading, The One That I Want, is a Redbook magazine’ June book pick and made it onto Cosmo and Glamour magazines’ hot summer reading lists.
Winn Scotch is also riding high these days thanks to the movie adaption of her previous novel – Time of My Life – the break-out book of her career. She talked with ModernMom’s Pop Culture Mama about her new book and the latest on the movie.
Tell us about the latest movie news!
Allison: My last book, Time of My Life, is being adapted by The Weinstein Company. Nicole Eastman, who wrote The Ugly Truth (which starred Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler) is putting finishing details on the screenplay and talent will be attached soon. My new book, The One That I Want, is out to studios and producers now.
The main character in Time of My Life is Jillian, a woman who wakes up one day to find herself back in the past. What actress do you envision for this role?
Allison: In my heart of hearts, I’m a Felicity girl, so Keri Russell would be my dream come true for the role of Jillian. But, that said, I have a good list of great actresses – and I’ve been fortunate enough to discuss this list with the producers and we are on the same page – all of whom I think would be amazing. Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Elizabeth Banks…Sincerely, there are probably about ten women I think would really do justice to the role, and I would be thrilled with any of them.
ModernMom: We saw on your blog that you’re a pop culture junkie, which male actors do you see playing the lead male characters?
Allison: Michael Vartan or James Marsden for Henry. Scott Speedman or James Marsden for Jack. Marsden can do either, as far as I’m concerned! I also wouldn’t cry in my coffee if Bradley Cooper, Timothy Olyphant, Patrick Wilson, Mark Ruffalo or Ben Affleck…or plenty of others were cast!
ModernMom: Tell us about your new book out just this week, The One That I Want?
Allison: Tilly Farmer is thirty-two years old and has the perfect life she always dreamed of: married to her high school sweetheart, working as a school guidance counselor, trying for a baby. Perfect. But one sweltering afternoon at the local fair, everything changes. Tilly wanders into a fortune teller’s tent and meets an old childhood friend, who offers her more than just a reading. Her friend gives her the gift of clarity. And soon enough, Tilly starts seeing things: her alcoholic father relapsing, staggering out of a bar with his car keys in hand; her husband uprooting their happy, stable life, a packed U-Haul in their driveway. And even more disturbing, these visions start coming true. Suddenly Tilly’s perfect life, so meticulously mapped out, seems to be crumbling around her. And as she furiously races to keep up with – and hopefully change – her destiny, she faces the question: Which life does she want? The one she’s carefully nursed for decades, or the one she never considered possible?
