Yes, I am a Twi-Hard Mom!

I usually talk about sports in this column, but this week I have to admit another obsession of mine – I love the Twilight series. It’s true. And I’m not ashamed to say that I’m a die-hard Twi-hard Mom.

I don’t exactly know why this became the generation defining movie for pre-teen girls. Ok, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner probably had something to do with it, but still.

I think if most moms read the books, especially Breaking Dawn, they wouldn’t be thrilled that their pre-teen daughters were reading them. The love story is a little too intense. Aren’t we supposed to be teaching our girls to get involved in activities like sports or dance class and stay away from the boys until they are much older?

I’m also not sure why people laugh when I say that I cannot wait to see Breaking Dawn Part 1. This movie is actually for us moms, as much as the media would fool us into thinking its for tweens. It reminds us of our first true love, and how it feels to have a “nice guy” who is always there for you, even if you only think him as a really good friend.

I am sure that the author of the Twilight Series, Stephanie Myers (who’s a mom herself), was writing for the moms out there who needed a fun way to escape from reality. A love story between a human choosing between a werewolf and vampire seems perfect.

I started reading this book about vampires in late 2007 when my friend Stephanie recommended it. It took me a few trips to the library before I finally started reading it but once I did, I couldn’t stop. I moved on to the next book immediately.

In February of 2008, my husband and I took a trip to Punta Cana with my brother and sister-in-law. Laura was just starting Twilight and I was finishing up the second book New Moon. I had brought the sequel. The books were so fat the airline wouldn’t let me check them. I had to carry them the whole way with my my husband making fun of me, but I didn’t care. I wasn’t going to be stuck on an island without knowing what happen with Bella, Edward and Jacob!

We spent that entire vacation reading the Twilight series and drinking margaritas. Our husbands hated us. But we didn’t care. We just soaked up the sun and read about vampires and werewolves. Some might say I shouldn’t have spent a week-long vacation with my husband (and no kids) with my nose stuck in a book. But those people obviously haven’t read these books yet. And besides, it’s not like we spent the entire night just reading…

I never thought I would actually like these books but I am so glad I read them before the movies came out. Because if I had believed the hype and media about the books, I would have missed out on Edward and Bella.

And this weekend I am really looking forward to getting together with my girlfriends, escaping my reality and entering the world of Bella Swan.

So for the rest of the moms out there that might feel a little silly being obsessed with this movie, don’t be! Twilight was made for us moms, so enjoy it.
