How to Treat Premature Ejaculation

In a 2006 report released by the European Society for Sexual Medicine, it was reported that for men who suffer from premature ejaculation, the average time for ejaculation was 1.8 minutes. This was in contrast to the “normal” time–7.5 minutes–for most men. Worldwide, 2.5 percent of all adult males suffer from premature ejaculation. Premature ejaculation can create tension in a relationship as the man becomes embarrassed about his condition and his partner begins to wonder if she has done something to cause it. While premature ejaculation can create significant stress and concern in a man’s life, several treatments and strategies are available to treat the condition.

Step 1

Make an appointment with a sex therapist. According to the Mayo Clinic, a sex therapist can assist in helping you correct the problem of premature ejaculation, using behavior modification techniques. In addition, the therapist can help you move past any performance anxiety you have have developed. The therapist will discuss your premature ejaculation and give you exercises and homework to do to change the way your body reacts in sexual situations.

Step 2

Take medications prescribed by your doctor. There are topical creams and certain antidepressants known to help alleviate premature ejaculation. Asking your doctor to prescribe medication may be embarrassing initially, but as you begin to see results it will have been well worth the asking.

Step 3

See a mental health professional. Many cases of premature ejaculation are caused by outside stress, marital problems or depression, according to the Mayo Clinic. Addressing these issues with a mental health professional can restore your earlier mental state; it will also take care of the premature ejaculation problem.

Step 4

Relax before sex. When a man suffers from premature ejaculation, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, in which it begins to happen every time he attempts a sexual encounter. Learning to meditate shortly before sex can help him relax and ease his mind, leaving him free to simply enjoy the closeness and romance of making love.

Step 5

Ask your partner to help you relax by giving you a massage shortly before sex. Giving mutual massages, playing a seductive board game and slowly working up to the actual sex act can provide you with the perfect atmosphere to last much longer during love making.

Warnings

  • Do not turn to alcohol or drugs to boost your confidence or relaxation before sex. This can lead to dependency and that brings on an entirely different set of problems.
