How to Make Candy Heart Magnets

Candy hearts are a Valentine’s Day classic, but you can use these tasty treats as more than just a snack. Using resin from your local craft store, you can create candy heart magnets using your favorite candies. Add magnets for a playful addition to your refrigerator or use your candy hearts to make jewelry, barrettes or other accessories. Setting candy into resin works for all sorts of small candies, so you can also make gummi bear magnets, M&M magnets or other crafts.

Step 1

Prepare your work area. You will need a flat surface and good ventilation. Protect the surface with layers of paper before beginning, as this project can be messy. Make plenty of time to work, and make sure there are no children or pets in the area.

Step 2

Mix your resin according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Choose a pourable resin. Handle resin carefully, and always wear proper safety gear. Mix resin in plastic cups and use disposable utensils. Prepare your resin right before you plan to use it.

Step 3

Pour your resin into a clean mold in a circular, heart or rectangular shape to make your candy heart magnets. Once the resin is poured, carefully add candies to the molds. If you are using conversation candy hearts, be sure to place the heart facing the correct direction. You can place smaller candies around a larger one if desired. Use a drinking straw to carefully blow out any bubbles on the resin.

Step 4

Allow to set until hard, at least 24 hours. The total setting time may depend upon the brand of resin you choose. Release from the mold, applying light heat to the backside of the mold if necessary to pop the candy heart magnets from the mold.

Step 5

Use E6000 brand adhesive to secure magnets to your resin candy hearts. Allow to dry thoroughly, then use. You also can add jewelry findings or hair clips to your resin candy hearts.
