How to Match Necklaces to Outfits
Accessorizing with a necklace adds drama or style to any outfit. The problem is, necklaces also can ruin a look. Follow a few simple tips to ensure that a necklace matches an outfit and gives an ensemble some panache.
Step 1
Choose a necklace in a color that complements an outfit. An exact match is not necessary, nor is it actually desirable. Aim for a bright pop of color that enhances both the color of the clothing and skin tone. A black outfit looks great with glittery or bright hues. Gold stands out with clothing in warm or neutral colors. Copper and bronze jazz up earth tones. Add sparkle to a red outfit with rubies, and wear sapphires with a blue ensemble.
Step 2
A necklace should not extend past the neckline of a blouse, except if it’s a very long pendant or beaded strand. A good resting point is your collarbone.
Step 3
Consider the shape of the neckline. A V-neck shirt should not be paired with a choker of beads. Select a piece that accentuates the contours of the neckline.
Step 4
Coordinate a necklace with other accessories. A necklace can bring together the colors on the handbag or shoes. A bold necklace should not be paired with other bold pieces of jewelry, however. Let the necklace to take center stage, and accent the look with small earrings or a bracelet.
Step 5
Experiment with different looks and styles. Try doubling a long chain or tying it in a knot. Layer a couple of strands in complementary colors. Wear a thin, delicate chain to complement to large earrings. Tie on a choker or short chain with a pendant to draw attention to your face.
Warnings
- Avoid mixing vintage with contemporary pieces, unless they share some common attributes.
