A Balancing Act: Ann Pleshette Murphy

By Samantha Ettus

Millions of women tune in to Ann Pleshette Murphy's topical parenting segments on ABC's Good Morning America. Yet what they might not realize is that as a mother of two teenagers, an author, TV personality, and former Editor-in-Chief of Parents Magazine, Ann is a story unto her own. As an interviewer, she is always the one asking the questions. I had a rare chance to turn the tables on Ann, asking her about balancing work

with her family as she reminisced about the challenges of her busy life and her kids' early years.

Samantha:How did you balance being editor-in-chief of a magazine with raising your two kids for so many years?

Ann: Who says my life was balanced?! There were many, many days when I felt I wasn't doing anything very well and I experienced the guilt that every mother feels. But I also recognized how critical it is to put our needs first not all the time, but a lot more than most mothers do. There were a lot of people who were there for me if I simply opened my mouth and cried, "Help!" My problem -- again, shared by countless moms is that I saw asking for help as an admission of failure. Which was and is ridiculous.

S: Did you ever feel like it was easier to go to work every day because you were working for a parenting magazine, hence thinking about kids all day anyway?

A: Absolutely. It's very difficult for moms who work in a high-testosterone environment to share their feelings about their kids or their conflicts or their guilt. It's wonderful to work with a team of people most of them mothers who understand, support, and validate the choices you've made.
