- Nutrition for Expectant Parents
Bridget Swinney, author of "Eating Expectantly" (Meadowbrook Press), talks about the importance of diet, nutrition, and exercise for the expectant parents.
- Six Tips for Getting More Sleep After Baby Arrives
There are endless reasons why new parents lack sleep. On top of the fact that babies don't sleep through the night, new moms and dads still have things to do. When the stork arrives it may seem that laundry duties double, work stress increases and the stream of visitors won't end.
- Childproofing Your Home
To make sure that your home is a safe haven for your children - and you - learn to spot and eliminate hazards throughout the house. This checklist will show you how.
- Easing the Anxiety of Childbirth
For the thousands of pregnant women who are preparing to give birth during September -- one of the most popular months for births -- and even those women who have a few more months to go, this can be an uncomfortable and restless time.
- Pregnancy No-Nos
When I was expecting my first child, threats to my baby's health seemed to lurk everywhere. I knew, of course, that alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs of any kind were off-limits. But what about those lattes I'd chugged before I knew I was pregnant? Did I need to get rid of my beloved cats? What sort of environmental hazards was I unwittingly exposing my fetus to? Nine months of caffeine withdrawal, cat avoidance, and breath-holding-around-noxious-odors later, my strapping baby boy arrived.
- Planning Ahead: Preplanned Versus Unplanned C-Sections
You might be thinking of going ahead and scheduling a cesarean because you figure it's got to be safer than undergoing one at the last minute after hours of labor. That sounds logical, but few studies distinguish between the two. As a result, what appear to be complications of cesareans may actually be related to protracted labor or the factors leading to it. Such complications might have been prevented if the C-section had been planned instead of an emergency. "We've saved their lives by doing a C-section," Walters says. "When they have a complication, we blame the C-section."
- Your “Real” Reproductive Age
Up until 2001, there were no clinical guidelines to characterize our reproductive life span. Finally, representatives from esteemed organizations, including the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the National Institutes of Health, and the North American Menopause Society, pooled their knowledge and developed the STRAW system. STRAW stands for the Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop in which it was developed, under the direction of Dr. Soules.
- Choosing a Pediatrician for Your Baby: The Prenatal Interview
As a pediatrician with 25 years experience, I really enjoy this meeting between parents-to-be and myself. I love it because I get to see the cute little round lady and her proud hubby before their life has been changed by the little alien. They're so bright and shiny, innocent and unsuspecting. Of course we know all that will soon change. Seriously, the prenatal interview is a good time to meet your new best friend-your pediatrician. I say this because parents and pediatricians spend a lot of time together, both in the office and on the phone. If she's a good pediatrician, your doctor won't mind scheduling an interview with you. After all, if she can't make time for you now, will she have time for you once the baby is born? Here's a helpful rule of thumb: if you call to schedule an interview and you're told that the doctor doesn't do interviews, don't "do" her.
