Cord Blood Banking - Part 2: The Realities

By Lolita Carrico

Since we decided to bank our second child's cord blood, I have been more than satisfied with the service we've received from the bank we chose.

Before our son was born, they had followed up with us many times to make sure we received everything and understood the procedures at the hospital.

They sent appropriate paperwork to my obstetrician and to the hospital so everyone was aware that we had chosen to bank our baby's cord blood.

I found this follow up on their part very helpful in the madness of the last few weeks before giving birth, my husband and I could have easily forgotten to bring the collection kit to the hospital or to get the appropriate paperwork to my doctor.

Thankfully and given the investment we were making, this was all taken care of for us.

I was scheduled for my c-section on May 14 and of course, just minutes before I was ready to go in for surgery, the nurse noticed that we didn't have our collection kit.

My husband rushed to the car to get it (where we'd stashed it weeks ago as the bank told us to) however it was also reassuring to learn that the hospital has kits on hand in the event that a family does forget.

As I was getting prepped for surgery, I overheard that the three women who had scheduled c-sections prior to mine that same day had also chosen to bank their baby's cord blood and my OB had a patient who gave birth vaginally that morning who also banked the blood.

Clearly, the procedure was catching on despite the cost.

Once our son was born (HOORAY!), my obstetrician quickly collected what she called "a good sample" of cord blood and packed it away in the kit.

I was pleased to hear that she was able to get a hefty sample since less blood is typically collected during a c-section as opposed to a vaginal delivery.

The rest of the process was a piece of cake a courier came to our hospital room a few hours later to collect the package and I received an email the next day notifying me of arrival to the lab.

Once I was at home, a representative from the bank (the same one who had been keeping me up to speed during the entire process) called to congratulate us and reassure us that all our data had been entered and the blood had been properly stored.

Overall, the cord blood banking process was extremely simple and effortless on our part.

The reputable banks (listed to the right) have a solid procedure in place focused on making the process as seamless as possible for their clients.

And, we now have the peace of mind knowing that we have taken advantage of a beneficial investment in our son's future.
