Beyond Pickles and Ice Cream: Keeping Your Cool With a Summer Pregnancy

By Lolita Carrico
Pregnant during the summer and looking to stay cool -- and healthy?

Experts at BabyFit.com say turn to the old standbys-pickles and ice cream. Why? Because ice cream delivers valuable calcium and the sodium in pickles may help with leg cramps.

According to nutritionist Becky Hand, "The drastic difference in the tastes of ice cream and pickles -- sweet and tart -- can also help with morning sickness which can be more acute in the warmer months." Hand, one of the experts on the new BabyFit.com website, advises pregnant women to consider lower fat alternatives to ice cream such as frozen yogurt, frozen ice milk, fruit and yogurt parfaits or fruit smoothies.

"In addition to making sure they get the nutrients they need, pregnant women need to drink at least 8-10 glasses of fluids daily during the summer months," Hand says. To add some variety to summer drink options, try lemonade, fruit juice, or add a twist of lemon or lime to a glass of water. While exercising, pregnant women need to drink one half cup of water every 15 minutes during hot, humid weather, she says.

Hand suggests pregnant women utilize Babyfit.com's nutrition tracker to make sure they are meeting their nutritional needs. With this program, pregnant women can enter into the tracker what they eat and get instant access to calorie and nutrient data, real-time goal and progress reports, and healthy eating alternatives.

According to Holly Little, a prenatal fitness expert with BabyFit.com, "Moms-to-be to can greatly benefit from an active pregnancy, by continuing exercise during the summer months. They should consider cool exercise options such as water aerobics or walking early or late in the day. Of course, for those really hot days, moms-to-be should stay inside and consider working out in air conditioning with an exercise videotape or do their favorite indoor exercises."
