Telling The Boss You’re Pregnant and Negotiating Maternity Leave

By Lolita Carrico

You're expecting and your spouse, family and friends are all thrilled.

Now comes the hard part: telling your boss and negotiating your leave.

Below are the most important steps to breaking the news and getting the time off you deserve:

1. First off, research your rights and your company's maternity and family leave policies.

Your company handbook or human resources department should be able to provide the information write down any questions you may have.

Take a look at your finances and figure what your ideal leave would entail.

2. Don't tell co-workers the news until you've told your boss office gossip and loose lips could get the news to your supervisor before you're ready or before you've decided how you'd like to handle the situation.

3.

Schedule a meeting with your boss: once you are informed about your company's policy and have a clear picture of how much time you might want to take off, make an appointment to talk to your boss. As well as telling your boss about your request for leave, it is also useful to discuss your long-term interest in working in the company. Some employers may be willing to give a generous maternity leave if they feel like you are committed to your job.

As your due date approaches, make sure to have a solid plan in place to handover work to colleagues.

A smooth transition will be appreciated by all and will set the standard for an effortless transition when you return.
