How to Curb Morning Sickness

By Jodie Lynn

Here are a few tips that seem to help some moms-to-be. Always check with your doctor before taking any non-medical advice.

  • Check with your mother and grandmother to see what made them sick during their pregnancy. This might give you a little insight.
  • Keep a journal of what smell, sound, taste and circumstance creates a nausea feeling.
  • Crackers work well before getting out of bed in the mornings along with small sips of sprite, seven-up or ginger ale working for some. As crazy as it sounds, Lemonade works for some moms-to-be.
  • Eat small healthy meals.
  • Drink 10 cups of water (8 ounces per cup) a day to avoid dehydration and ward off constipation. A cup of watermelon cubes is an alternative to water. It equals about a Ã?½ cup of fluid.
  • If you have figured out that you become nauseous while shopping in the grocery store, you can call in your order and have it delivered or go and pick it up.
  • During the summer weather, which many of us will continue to have for at least two more months, humidity along with stale air, seem to make morning sickness worse in some women. Turn down the thermostat if possible and/or purchase a "quiet" air conditioner.
  • In the winter, add extra clothing instead of turning up the heat. The warmer your house is, the hotter your body becomes and the more fluids you will lose.
  • If cologne makes you ill, stop wearing it, subscribing to certain magazines that have an ample dose tucked away inside each issue, and avoid shopping in stores that have funny smells that make you want to throw up.
  • To be safe, if you have a certain craving, check with your doctor before you go hog-wild with it. Pickles are usually acceptable due to the fluids, fiber, and especially dill pickles.
  • If motion makes you feel ill, move slower and possibly rethink holiday travel plans.

While some poor souls are sick off and on throughout their pregnancy, many times, the actual "sick - I need to throw up" feeling disappears in the second or third trimester.
