Gadget of the Week: Amazon’s Kindle

KindleSo, by now -- given that Oprah declared it her favorite gadget recently -- you've likely heard about Amazon's Kindle.  The revolutionary reading device is lighter and thinner than a paperback yet "reads" just like a book -- with some useful, high-tech functions like bookmarking, highlighting and instant dictionary lookups.

As advanced as it is, the Kindle is effortless and simple to use. Books of your choice are downloaded wirelessly in seconds, and there are no confusing cables to hook up at all. The device can store about 200 books plus you can read newspapers, magazines and over 1000 blogs on it.

It does come with a hefty price tag at $359, however books from the Kindle Store are about half the cost ($9.99) of buying a hardcover bestseller and the amount of paper that will be saved is a significant contribution to our environment. If you're an avid reader, it's worth the investment.

Kindle: Amazon's Wireless Reading Device - $359 at Amazon.com

Want to win a $250 Amazon.com gift certificate? Tell us: what's on or what would be on your Kindle? On December 1st, we'll pick four commenters who will receive a $250 gift certificate to Amazon.com to help towards getting a Kindle or buying books!

Congratulations to our winners! Jennifer M. of Plano, TX; Rachel S. of Newton, MA; Courtney B. of Charlotte, NC; and Rosanna S. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL!

It has been quite a while since I have had the opportunity to book shop.  I am not certain of the exact titles, but I know the topics.

I would choose a couple self-help type books, specifically on parenting (an energetic/spirited 5-yr old boy).  I would love a book showing step-by-step what a Mom inventor should do with her product from start to finish.  And for relaxation, I would choose something uplifting, short stories and such.  If there was anything left over, I would buy my two boys some books that would help us teach them to read and so forth.

Wish me luck!

I don’t have a Kindle, but I think it would be a useful device for a busy working mom. I could take it on the metro and not have to worry about fumbling for my books…

Wow--maybe I could finally lighten my load by not hauling all those half-read books and articles around. (My chiropractor might endorse that move!)

Anyway--if I had a Kindle, I would probably get to read the paper again since I wouldn’t have to worry about turning the pages while standing up in the over-crowded metro. I could return the books I have borrowed from friends and just add those to my reading list. And all those news articles I like to read...yup I guess I could read them on Kindle too.

My blackberry would be grateful...might get a break from me attempting to read articles with the intermittent internet access.

Only four? There are so many books to read and life is so short. I recently moved down to the Dominican Republic and every time I come back to the states I bring back books for my husband (in Spanish, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and anything on American History) and books for my son. I rarely have room for books for myself so I have read the Alchemist twice in the last three months and have been reading the same issue of Yoga Journal since May! I am desperate for a Kindle...it would change my life! I would download everything by Paulo Coehlo first, then Richard Bach, Siddhartha by Herman Hesse and probably the Dr. Sears series. This sounds like a dream.

Posted by Somertime on 11/17/2008  at  04:06 PM

I’d like to have some classics to read again and again, and a selection of new fiction and non-fiction.

1.  The Bible
2.  To Kill a Mockingbird
3.  anything by Maeve Binchy
4.  Elm Creek Quilts series
5.  books in French and English for my son

This would be something my whole family could use!  How exciting!

If I had a Kindle, I’d get What to Expect for Toddlers, the Audacity of Hope, 123 Magic, and Setting Limits for the Strong Willed Child. They are at the top of my list, but it’s so hard to find time to read these days.

I am such an eclectic reader.  I devour parenting books and DIY manuals.  I love reading political and social commentaries as well as the classics.  There are all kinds of possibilities for this.  What I love about books is that it really opens your mind to new points of view and ways of life.

I’m not much for pulp fiction or romance literature… I can’t see much point in wasting my time with books that won’t improve my life or make me a more tolerant and intelligent person.  But there is a lot of good fiction out there.

My short list for this week:

How to Win Friends and Influence People - Dale Carnegie
The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How The War on Terror Turned into a War on American Ideals by Jane Mayer
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Hemingway
The Mysterious Benedict Society - Trenton Lee Stewart
Do Hard Things:  A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations - Harris & Harris

I don’t have a Kindle, but have been looking into it (though it is definitely a bit on the pricey side).  Here are a few things I would have on my Kindle and why:
1 - Newsweek or US News and World Report.  It would be absolutely amazing to have a Kindle that I could carry with me so that I could read up on my news whenever I had the opportunity.  I currently receive the print version of both of these and while I enjoy reading them when I find time.  I often find myself “behind” on my magazines because I’m just plain tired at the end of the day and would rather read a mystery, etc.
2 - JD Robb - I love her books and would be so happy to have all of her latest ones at my disposal to read as they come.
3 - Linda Greenlaw - I’ve recently joined a book group and we read one of her books that was very good.  I’d love to have the rest available too.
4 - Speaking of that book club . . . It would be great to have the two books per month that we read on my Kindle.  I wouldn’t have to worry about the library not having enough copies.

Thanks so much for the AMAZING giveaway!  While I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I win, I know whoever does will be very grateful!  :o)

Ooooohh! To have 300 titles at my fingertips wherever I went!  I’d have books by Nora Roberts, her alter-ego J.D. Robb, Magic Tree House and A to Z Mysteries for my son (to make waiting rooms more fun!), Parenting Magazine, Real Simple, and Family Fun. A New Earth and a few other “self-help” books to lose myself in… The possibilities are endless—difficult to choose specifics. The bottom line… On MY Kindle, I’d have an ecclectic library at the ready, so whenever I could steal a moment or two, I could lose myself in the written word.

I think that I would finally sign up for graduate school or at least audit some interesting courses and get the text books on Kindle.  I’ve heard from some child study team members that using a Kindle can improve concentration and facilitate learning especially for people with learning disabilities.  I tend to multitask while studying, so if the Kindle can help me retain what I read with less effort, I’ll be it’s number 1 fan!

I am a big book reader and listener of audiobooks.  I’m not like most readers in that I don’t like to keep books around as trophies. A Kindle would not only afford me the opportunity of third method of absorbing books it would also help the environment by reducing the need for paper.  I would also share this new technology with my two 10-year old daughters as they are the future for which technology will play an ever increasing role.

As for my own personal reading list with which I would load my Kindle, I always think back to a question asked of me regarding six people you would like to invite to a dinner party.  My Kindle would have titles related to those folks:

1. George Washington because I would want to know how he drove himself to keep going in the face of such hopelessness. It would have been so easy to just give up.

2. Nostradamus - Can you teach me to do that? I’m specifically interested in the lottery numbers!

3. Ronald Reagan - such a positive and inspiring man and knew how to tell great stories.

4. My ancestors (as a collective) - I want to find out who’s to blame grin More specifically, my grandfather - because I miss him greatly. (Genealogy)

5. Jerome Howard - who doesn’t love Curley from the Three Stooges? What’s a dinner party without a stooge? I’ll make certain there are plenty of pies for dessert.

6. Jesus Christ because he is the savior and you don’t want to dis’ the Lord. I would also love to know if Christopher Moore was accurate in his interpretation of Jesus’ lost years in his book Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal. (Religion)
