Jenny McCarthy + Jim Carrey Lead Effort to “Green Vaccines”

JimCelebumom Jenny McCarthy and boyfriend Jim Carrey led a march in Washington DC on Wednesday to raise awareness about toxins in vaccines. McCarthy, who chronicled her son's battle with autism in her book "Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism" (Dutton), has been fairly outspoken about her concerns about the link between childhood vaccines and autism.

Citing childhood vaccines as a likely contributing factor to the rise in childhood autism and possibly other diseases as well, the actress and TACA (Talk About Curing Autism) are most concerned with the schedule of childhood vaccines and preservatives added to the vaccines. The Green our Vaccines campaign attributes a rise in childhood autism to an increased number of vaccines, coupled with chemicals used in them that may cause severe neurological problems to a small minority.

You go Jenny!  I’m fortunate that my kids are healthy but I agree that the vaccine schedule is too aggressive!  God bless her!

UNfortunately, Jenny is misinformed. Her “green vaccine” campaign is noble, but she doesn’t have all of the facts. There are many factors that make a child autistic, not one. Her “silver bullet” theory is a bit naive, and the fact that she is a celebrity and has lots of money and airtime make her seem like an expert. She is not, and while I support a less aggressive vaccine schedule, I think that it is easy to fall into “celeb expert” mentality.I encourage all those interested to read a balance of studies on the topic.

Is she just guessing? Or does she have facts — indepth studies, research projects, etc. — to support her contention.

There have been many instances of people arguing that this or that is harmful, only to find out later that this wasn’t the case. Remember the Alar scare?

I have seen Jenny speak and read some of her interviews.  While I haven’t seen or read everything, my sense is that she does not consider vaccinations as a “silver bullet”, but one of many possible exposures that can trigger autism in SOME children.  Her biggest message is that autism is treatable and symptoms can be greatly reduced through diet.

I dont know the extent of her research, but she is living her own case study, which, does have its place in shedding light on facts and often directs scientific research.  She has a sense of what caused her own son’s autism and would just ask that the CDC recognize it a possible cause and take steps to protect those kids that might be at risk.

Here is a quote from an article she published on CNN.com

“We believe autism is an environmental illness. Vaccines are not the only environmental trigger, but we do think they play a major role. If we are going to solve this problem and finally start to reverse the rate of autism, we need to consider changing the vaccine schedule, reducing the number of shots given and removing certain ingredients that could be toxic to some children.”

She is not advocating for not vaccinating kids, but rather considering an alternate vaccination schedule.

“We wish to state, very clearly, that we are not against all vaccines, but we do believe there is strong evidence to suggest that some of the ingredients may be hazardous and that our children are being given too many, too soon!”
