BrookeIf anyone has seen the “stars without their make-up” section in People’s Most Beautiful issue, you will likely be as mesmerized as me at Brooke Shield’s gorgeous photo, especially her skin. Brooke, 43, shared some of her beauty secrets for her flawless face, namely how she relies on facials at Balance Spa on Montana Avenue once every two months, where she gets an Epicuren Enzyme facial with an enzyme peel. “I just started getting more conscientious of getting facials,” she says. “It’s about that and sunscreen.

While we might not be able to shell out the money (or time!) for regular facials, Brooke’s sunscreen tip is one was can all add to our beauty rituals, and to our kid’s routines as well. The New York Times reported in 2007 that while some of us worry about a possible deficiency of vitamin D, especially in little ones who are kept out of the sun, “it takes only a few minutes of exposure to ultraviolet light two or three times a week during the summer months to make enough vitamin D to last all year.” The American Academy of Pediatrics “suggests that a safer alternative is to take 200 units of vitamin D a day, starting at the age of 2 months, through infant formula, fortified cows’ milk or soy milk, or a vitamin,” according to the article.

Short of remaining indoors there are three main approaches to sun protection, for us and for our kids:

1. Wearing clothes that block much of the sun’s radiation.

2. Applying a complete sunscreen throughout the day every day.

3. Staying out of the midday sun and in the shade as much as possible.
