Moms Making the World a Better Place…And Teaching their Kids How Too!

By Natasha Burton

Every little bit counts when it comes to keeping the earth green and celeb moms are doing their part by showing their kids that saving the planet doesn't have to take a lot of energy or time. Working Mother asked celebs what they do to help protect the environment while juggling such busy schedules.

Mariska Hargitay, mom of one-year-old August, told Working Mother that as a new mom, she "can't think of a more important thing to do for my child than to make changes in my life to help safe the earth." Mariska says that she does her part daily, and it takes no time at all. She says, "Use cloth napkins that you can wash instead of paper napkins and paper towels. If you use paper products, buy environmentally safe ones."

Cate Blanchett, mom of two boys (with another baby on the way!) told Working Mother her tip is to "conserve water. I take two-minute showers, and it's great to see my children engaged in these things, like when you put your toothbrush under the tap, turn off the water the minute you take it out and don¹t let the water run." If Cate can take two-minute showers and look as fabulous as she does, surely rest of us can, too!

Celeb families also support Mother Earth with the clothes on their back. Angelina and Brad's kids, as well as Julia Roberts' little ones, sport the 100%-organic, "Respect Your Mother" tee by Local Celebrity to benefit Global Green USA.

Gwen Stefani, Sheryl Crow, Brad Pitt, Samantha Harris and Courteney Cox are all fans of Lollipop Zen's hippie-inspired tees that send messages of universal peace, acceptance and understanding. Added plus, they make matching duds for mom!

For more celeb tips and easy ideas on going green, check out Working Mother's November issue and to pick up some go-green tees for your kids (and

People Magazine Names Dad Matt Damon Sexiest Man Alive

By Natasha Burton

Move over bachelor George Clooney. This is the year of the sexy dad! People magazine chose Matt Damon, father to Isabella, 1, for their top male honor this year. However, CBS News reports that the "Bourne" actor turned People down at first.

Apparently, Matt wrote People a letter explaining that he doesn't normally talk about his personal life and admitted he was blushing when he read that he had been picked. While he got a huge kick out of the nod, he didn't feel worthy, writing to the magazine, "You just gave an aging suburban dad the ego boost of a lifetime." Sigh! Is it just me or does that make Matt even sexier? Of course, after People persisted, Matt ended up accepting the honor.

On the cover, People also features fellow dad Patrick Dempsey, father to Talullah, 5, Darby, nine months, and Sullivan, nine months. Two of my fave hot dads, David Beckham and Brad Pitt, also got recognition this year. You can read more about Matt in his interview with People, as well as feast your eyes on all of the sexiest men of 2007 in the latest issue, on newsstands Friday.

Which celeb dads do you find sexy? Tell us on our Mommywood message boards...

Nancy Grace’s Post-Delivery Complications

By Natasha Burton

Headline News announced on Tuesday that their anchor Nancy Grace, who gave birth to twins Lucy and Elizabeth on November 4, has been hospitalized with complications from her pregnancy. The spokeswoman from the network explains, "This past Sunday, Nancy started experiencing discomfort, and was having trouble breathing, on her way to church. She was brought to the emergency room in Atlanta. Her doctors found two blood clots in her lungs, which occurred as a result of the pregnancy."

This isn't the first complication Nancy, 48, had with her pregnancy. She delivered her twins two months shy of her January due date. People magazine reports that Nancy is doing well and should be released from the hospital on Friday.

Our thoughts are with you, Nancy.

Celeb Moms Lend a Hand This Holiday Season

By Natasha Burton

With Thanksgiving just one week away, it's time to start thinking about what we¹re thankful for. Good health and roofs over our heads are comforts many of us take for granted. In honor of the holiday in which we all count our blessing, Mommywood wants you to know about how you can give back by being apart of the Red Cross "Helping Hands" Campaign this month.

Julianne Moore's handprint

Moms like Julianne Moore, Cynthia Nixon and Jaime Pressly created one-of-a-kind, autographed celebrity handprints as part of the "Helping Hands" charity auction. One-hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross. You can log onto www.curel.com for info on how to bid and the auction will run through November 28th.

You can also help out while you run your errands. Show support for the Red Cross by picking up a limited edition bottle of the Curel Targeted Therapy Hand & Cuticle Cream, at your local drugstore. I don't know about you, but this time of year my cuticles get a little scary. The cream is not only a must-have winter beauty product, it also proudly bears the American Red Cross logo, representing Curel's $250,000 donation in support of families in need throughout the country this holiday season.

This Month, Join Organic-Loving Celeb Moms and Dads and Try Vegan

By Natasha Burton

Even though November's trademark is Thanksgiving, the turkey dinner holiday, it is also National Vegan Month. The vegan discipline mandates zero consumption of any animal products - so meat, cheese, eggs, milk are all out.

It's not the easiest lifestyle (forget about ice cream. goodbye In & Out), so in honor of National Vegan Month, Mommywood wants to give a shout-out to all the celeb moms who are vegans, including Carrie-Anne Moss, mother of two boys, Kate Moss, mother of Lila, 5, Chynna Phillips, mother of Jamison, 7, Vance, 6, and Brooke, 2, and Jennifer Connelly, mother of Kai, 10, and Stellan, 4. Even dads Tobey Maguire, Damon Wayans, and Noah Wyle do the vegan thing. Bryce Dallas Howard, new mom of a baby boy, used to be vegan but is now vegetarian. Either way, it still takes discipline!

Dietitian Page Love says that kids can go vegan too, as long as they are still getting the protein they need to keep them healthy. She suggests, "soy cheese, soy milk, tofu products. There are now wheat based meat products...these are just excellent protein sources that are available." Dr. Reed Mangels, Ph.D. says moms can even start their children out as vegans from birth. He suggests breast-feeding for at least a year before slowly introducing vegan-approved foods into a baby's diet.

If you want to celebrate the vegan way this month, visit your local Whole Foods to pick up vegan treats (try the bakery section for some yummy vegan cookies) or find a tasty natural eatery in your area.

My favorite place to nosh au natural is out here in L.A.-- M Café de Chaya on Melrose. It's a macrobiotic café and a celeb fave too -- mom Jodie Foster was there just recently. To see some samplings of their vegan and other natural options, check out this news segment with M Café manager Melissa Melcombe.

She'll give you a tour of the place and show you how they create their tasty, but animal-free, concoctions.
