Message: {summary} At the 2007 Detroit Auto Show - one of the car industry's biggest events to show off new models for the upcoming year - the new Saturn Aura took top honors as "Car of the Year" as well as "Car of the Year for Women." So, it should come as no surprise that the design team included many women - like this month's Hot Modern Mom, Crystal Windham, lead interior designer for the Aura. Name: Crystal Windham Day job: Automotive Interior Designer - General Motors Age: 34 Number of Children: 2 Hometown: Detroit, MI MM: How long have you worked in car design? Crystal: Over 12 years MM: Have you seen your industry change as far as women and their roles? Crystal: The diversity of our workforce has changed dramatically over the years - especially women and their roles. There are many more women than when I first started my career and more importantly, more women in power which has increased the voice of women overall within the company. {pagebreak} MM: As far as design, do you find female drivers influence the design of cars today? Crystal: Absolutely - and we see the benefit in designing from a woman's point of view. Specifically speaking about the Aura, we took aesthetics into consideration - like brick and ivory trim and flow of the lines. We also included ambient lighting that's just enough to see inside the car but not too glaring and incorporated feedback from women in the function and storage, for example - the armrest is configured to pop-up and can perfectly store a woman's purse! MM: What are your secrets to balancing career and family? Crystal: I stay organized by knowing my priorities but also remembering to stay flexible. I also have built a strong support system that I make sure to nurture and stay connected with other mothers. MM: What do you drive? Crystal: Right now, I'm in a cross-over style car - a Cadillac SRX. http://modernmom.com/550/
