Get (Wii) Fit

by Lolita Carrico

Wii The much-hyped Wii Fit launched about six months ago to much fanfare...so much so that the "game" is still back-ordered and sold-out pretty much everywhere.

For a quick recap: Nintendo's Wii system changed the landscape of gaming consoles by getting users off the couch and physically interacting with games...I had already considered their boxing game (a part of the Wii Sports package) a workout so it's no surprise that experts are touting Wii Fit as a potential exercise revolution.

A cross between a video game and personal trainer, Wii Fit features over 40 activities--from yoga to aerobics to strength training--which are performed on the Wii Balance Board. The Balance Board senses your movements and helps you maintain form in real-time while constantly tracking your progress. Aerobic activities like running, boxing and hula-hooping (my abs were sore for a week thanks to daily hula challenges with my boys) burn calories and get your heart pumping while strength-training and balance games focus on muscle tone and posture.

The Balance Board is also a high-tech weight scale -- it keeps track of every user's weight and BMI and even calculates "Fitness Age," which is determined by BMI and the ability to perform some basic exercises.

Celebrity fitness trainer Ashley Borden suggests using Needak's Rebounder with Wii Fit for an effective at-home workout that'll definitely get you to break a sweat and see quick results.
