Parents Turn Teen Son Over to Police
18-year old Ryan Schallenberger was arrested over the weekend after his parents turned him into police for allegedly plotting a Columbine-like attack at his high school. His parents phoned authorities after a large amount of ammonium nitrate was delivered to their home. Police also say the parents found a disturbing journal that detailed his plans for a suicide attack and included maps of the school.
Schallenberger was one of the top students at his high school and had not caused any serious problems before his arrest, principal Scott Radkin said.
Do you think the Schallenberger's did the right thing? What would you do in this case -- turn your child over to the cops or seek counseling for him first?

Wow, that’s shocking. Hopefully he will get the counseling he needs. Thank God they caught him before he followed through with his plan.
That was very brave of the parents. It must have been one of the hardest things for them to do.
Those parents are paying attention! I remember reading all about the parents of the columbine kids having all these warning signs. These parents obviously had the greater good in mind. Hopefully since they were preventative, the kid will get help and not be put behind bars. I can’t imagine it is a crime to think bad thoughts but having the supplies delivered? That might be a different story!

I don’t know...it’s a hard call to make. I don’t fault the parents at all for calling the police but I think I would have tried to get some sort of counseling first.
