Debate: Mom Arrested for Leaving Sleeping Child in Car
The news of a Chicago-area mom who was arrested for leaving her sleeping 2-year old in the car while she stepped just a few yards away has sparked much debate between those who feel police over-reacted or blame the mom for putting her child in danger.
Treffly Coyne goes to court today to face misdemeanor child endangerment charges, which could land her in jail for up to a year.
On our message boards, moms seem to support Coyne...after all, most of us likely have stepped away from our cars with our kids in it.
What do you think - should this mom have acted more responsibly or are the police blowing this way out of proportion?

I agree that this is a huge over reaction. Now, I also have to say people in this area are just paranoid about babies being left in cars. Missouri has had two really awful infant deaths because of parents forgetting their children in their car. This cop may have thought the mother forgot her child or wants to send a wake up call to all mother’s that cops are watching parents.
I know I have done it and it is sheer stupid laziness, but I can always see my child and it is ONLY if it is cold or raining out. I would never leave my child in a hot car.
Did she leave the car running? This is very serious as well because a lot of people get carjacked in the winter. Again, a child with special needs was carjacked because the Dad was using a pay phone and left the car running for heat.
Our world is not safe. God bless this policeman for trying to keep us safe.

Yes, I think the cop blew this way out of proportion. If the mom really did step just a few feet away for a few minutes and kept the sleeping child in her sight, then this is one over-zealous cop. If she goes to jail for this, the cop will be responsible for children being deprived of their (innocent) mother and he should be punished for that.
