Medical Mistakes in Hospitals

By Modern Mom Staff

QuaidsDennis Quaid and his wife, Kimberly, appeared on 60 Minutes Sunday night to recount the experience when a hospital's mistake resulted in their newborn twins receiving a life-threatening overdose of the drug Heparin.

Now, four months later, their twins are thankfully doing fine and the Quaids are focused on drawing attention to what is one of the leading causes of death in America - preventable human, medical error.

"These mistakes that occurred to us are not unique. And they're not unique even to Cedars. They happen in every hospital, in every state in this country. And 100,000 people, that I've come to find out, there's 100,000 people a year are killed every year in hospitals by a medical mistakes," he said.

Have you or anyone you know ever had to deal with an error made by a medical professional?

Elliot Spitzer’s Escort: Every Mom’s Worst Nightmare

By Alison Singh Gee

SildaThe saga of the New York's seemingly high-minded governor, Eliot Spitzer, has kept us all riveted for days, ever since the New York Times first broke the story of his hiring of a $1000-an-hour prostitute.

His wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, a former corporate lawyer who left her career to support her husband's political aspirations and look after their three daughters, has stood by his side.

Today, the Times features a profile of "Kristen," Spitzer's hired escort. Kristen, whose actual name Ashley Youmans, is 22 and beautiful. She has suffered a troubled past, including physical abuse, drugs and homelessness.

If you were in Silda Wall Spitzer's position, would you stand by your husband?

Debate: Mom Arrested for Leaving Sleeping Child in Car

By Modern Mom Staff

Baby in CarThe news of a Chicago-area mom who was arrested for leaving her sleeping 2-year old in the car while she stepped just a few yards away has sparked much debate between those who feel police over-reacted or blame the mom for putting her child in danger.

Treffly Coyne goes to court today to face misdemeanor child endangerment charges, which could land her in jail for up to a year.

On our message boards, moms seem to support Coyne...after all, most of us likely have stepped away from our cars with our kids in it.

What do you think - should this mom have acted more responsibly or are the police blowing this way out of proportion?

UK Report: Motherhood Affects Woman’s Pay

By Modern Mom Staff

new momA study done by the UK's Trade Union Congress (TUC), an organization representing over seven million employees, found that having children has a direct impact on women's salaries--resulting in them being paid up to 20% less than their male counterparts.

"Women are paying an unacceptable penalty simply for having children," TUC leader Brendan Barber said. "We all expect our wages to increase as our careers progress. But women's wages start to stagnate as early as their 30s."

Do you think we have a similar "penalty" for women who return to work after motherhood in the US?
