Get Into the Zone

By Stacey Crew

No, this isn't an article about organizing your diets but rather it is about organizing your home and life! As a professional organizer I notice that most folks do not know how manage their space and therefore their time. So, here is your primer for creating zones designated areas that will help you get and stay organized.

Why create zones?

Zones help divide a room or space into usable sections and provide direction

Zones work! They keep supplies and related materials together so you can find them when you need them. This saves you hundreds of hours every year and decreases stress and frustration. When you're thinking about creating zones for your child's room think about the nursery school system. Your child will quickly grasp what happens in each zone. That keeps things calm and makes clean up a snap!

Zones help us keep track of supplies

Nothing keeps us from our pet projects like not being able to find the pieces we need when we want to work. So what we hoped would be an enjoyable hobby, becomes yet another dreaded and neglected task. Think zones for your supplies and it will take only moments to get started.

Zones save us money

When my clients organize a zone for paying bills they find that they stop those nasty and costly late charges, get a handle on their expenses and start to live more consciously. Zones keep you from overbuying and overspending on supplies at a glance because you can see what you have and what you need.

Adopting Zones

The five major zones in a kitchen include the cooking zone-where you keep the cookware, spices, and a cutting board-the baking zone, food preparation area, the dishwashing zone, and eating zone. If all supplies for each function are in that zone, preparing a meal or baking a cake becomes much easier. And for busy moms, set up a "Lunch" station to simplify packing lunches for the kids!

When zoning a space, consider limiting the number of functions in any particular room so that you have room to add other functions as your needs change. Once you determine the zone for any particular activities place all related supplies in that area. For example, if it makes sense to create your bill-paying zone in the kitchen, then designate a portion of cabinet space to hold a portable file container that holds everything needed when it comes time to pay bills, including envelopes, stamps, a pen, and a calculator.
