Dear Dr. Tanya Remer-Altmann -

Q: I am trying to potty train my 18 month old boy and every one seems to think that I am doing it too soon. It this true? I am trying to conceive again and I will like to have potty trained him by the time I do get pregnant and have the second baby.

Thanks, Gabriela

Dr. Tanya Remer-Altmann says,

A: How's the potty training going for you? Children are ready at different times to begin using the potty. Signs of readiness are first letting you know when he needs to be changed, then signally you before he needs to go and later making it in to the toilet - at least some of the time. Make sure to praise him for any success no matter how small. Most boys are ready to begin using the potty closer to 21/2, but if he's showing you he's aware of his body and seems ready, then go for it! Otherwise, take a step back and relax. Often, if you have an outside pressure on you to get him trained, such as the arrival of a sibling or preschool deadline, it won't happen leaving all involved frustrated. The good news is that eventually, everyone uses the toilet!
